Lower Thames Crossing Project Approved
The U.K. government has approved a $13-billion plan to construct the Lower Thames Crossing, a new road connection across the Thames River east of London. The project, which includes a 14-mile-long highway linking Kent and Essex, will feature the longest road tunnel in the country. The decision, announced on March 20, marks a significant step toward easing congestion and improving connectivity in the region.
With the approval in place, the project will now move into the detailed design phase, followed by a six-year construction period set to begin next year
The new roadway will connect the A2 and M2 in Kent with the A13 and M25 in Thurrock. Central to the project is a 2.6-mile-long tunnel beneath the Thames, with each bore accommodating three traffic lanes. The Lower Thames Crossing is expected to alleviate congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel and Dartford Crossing, currently the only road crossing east of London.
The project delivery team includes a joint venture of Bouygues and Murphy for the tunnels and approaches, Balfour Beatty for roads north of the Thames, and Skanska for roads in Kent. Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) is proud to contribute to this landmark infrastructure project. GZ has been contracted by the Bouygues-Murphy JV to carry out geotechnical services along the tunnel alignment and design the SCL cross passages, bringing our tunneling expertise to one of the U.K.’s most significant transportation projects.
We look forward to supporting the successful delivery of the Lower Thames Crossing and enhancing the region’s transportation network for generations to come.
