Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) is at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) 2013 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. June 24 through 26. GZ Tunnel Engineer Anthony Bauer will be presenting a paper that he authored regarding the Port of Miami Project entitled, “Comparison of Predicted Versus Observed Structural Displacements of Existing Structures at the Port of Miami.”

Breakthrough at St. John's Wood

A major milestone in the London Cable Replacement Tunnels project was recently achieved when the tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Cleopatra”, with a diameter of 4 meters (13 feet), achieved breakthrough on the 8 kilometer (5 mile) long Eade Road in Haringey, north London, to St. John’s Wood Substation. No. 7 Line Extension Project

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has announced that the No. 7 Line Extension Project will be awarded the 2013 Construction Project of the Year by the New York State Society of Professional Engineers. Gall Zeidler Consultants is a sub consultant to the Hill International, LiRo Engineers and HDR/Daniel Frankfurt (“HLH7”) Joint Venture, providing construction management services for this $1.1 billion project. GZ Principal Vojtech Gall Presenting at 12th International Underground Construction Conference

GZ principal Dr. Vojtech Gall will be presenting at the 12th International Conference Underground Construction in Prague, Czech Republic this week. The conference is endorsed by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA). Dr. Gall’s presentation is entitled “Non-Disruptive Alternatives for Grade Separation Projects in Urban Settings Using Very Shallow Conventional Tunneling” and highlights two GZ projects: the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project and East Side Access Tunneling Under Northern Boulevard. Devil’s Slide Tunnels Open

On March 25, the Devil’s Slide Tunnels on Highway 1 in Pacifica, California opened to the public after five years of construction. These twin highway tunnels were constructed through San Pedro Mountain and bypass a section of Highway 1 that is prone to rock and mudslides. GZ provided IOST support services including the preparation of shop drawings, ground structure interaction analyses, evaluation of ground conditions in the field and the selection of ground support categories, as well as the evaluation of NATM instrumentation and results monitoring and the provision of senior advisory field staff.

Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project

GZ will be working as a sub consultant for HNTB as an independent design verifier on the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also called the Eurasia Tunnel Project. This tunnel will connect the European and Asian sides of the city of Istanbul, Turkey and will be built in the seabed through a highly active seismic zone and under extreme water pressure. Construction is expected to be completed by 2017.

DC Metro Silver Line Extension Update

Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) has announced that Phase 1 of the the new Silver Line, eventually extending Metro’s service to Dulles International Airport, is 87 percent complete. With heavy construction over, MWAA is now installing electrical equipment and testing the new rail line.

GZ Paper to be Published in WTC 2013 Proceedings

WTC 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland

GZ’s paper, entitled “Prediction of Behavior of Structures due to Large Bore EPBM Tunneling at the Port of Miami”, will be published in the 2013 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) Proceedings. The paper was authored by GZ principal Vojtech Gall, GZ tunnel engineer Anthony Bauer and Phillipe Bourdon from Bouygues Civil Works Florida (BCWF). GZ is excited to attend this year’s WTC in Geneva, Switzerland.
