HS2 Reveals Innovative 9.1m Diameter Herrenknecht TBMs
Work continues on the HS2 C1 project in the UK and a recent article in the Tunnelling Journal discusses the first of HS2’s newly revealed Herrenknecht 9.1m diameter TBMs. The innovated TBMs, which are set to launch early next year will include an innovative onboard robot to improve safety and efficiency during tunneling. The robot, called the Krokodyl, will perform simple repetitive tasks that would otherwise be performed by workers, such as removing wooden spacers between tunnel segments and inserting connection dowels, removing people from what is a potentially hazardous area during segment installation.
Gall Zeidler Consultants is part of the Align Team, serving as a geotechnical specialist and assisting with the tunnel design, as well as designing the 38 cross passages.
