Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project Reaches Critical Milestone
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued a Notice to Proceed to the Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture consisting of Dragados USA, Flatiron Constructors, Vinci Construction and Dodin Campenon Bernard, to begin construction on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The $3.8 billion project will add twin two-lane tunnels next to the existing HRBT and widen Interstate 64. Most of construction will occur between late 2020 and 2025, with launching of the Tunnel Boring Machines for excavation of the twin tunnels anticipated in 2022.
Gall Zeidler Consultants has been retained by the designer for the underground works, Mott MacDonald (MM), to perform Independent Design Verification (IDV) services for the bored tunnels and approach tunnel structures of the HRBT project.
