GZ Consultants presented at the 2020 SME MineXchange conference in Phoenix, Arizona. GZ Senior Geologist Timothy O’Brien’s presentation, “An Engineered Tunneling Approach for Mine Access Tunnels,” discussed a number of recent mining projects in which GZ provided an engineered approached to mine access tunnels, including Luck Stone Quarry, Virginia, Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah and the Soto Norte Gold Mine project, Colombia. Mr. O’Brien’s presentation was featured in an article by International Mining, which focused on GZ’s work with rehabilitation of the C-6 Tunnel at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon copper mine. GZ developed a rehabilitation design for the tunnel that enabled continuous operation of the critical ore conveyor through the C-6 tunnel during construction. The rehabilitation design, which involved the use of yielding steel sets, successfully stabilized the tunnel and also included a two-year group control management plan with an instrumentation and monitoring program.
