GZ’s Senior Tunnel Engineer Dr. Ritika Kundu at the UCA WIT Field Trip
GZ’s Senior Tunnel Engineer, Dr. Ritika Kundu will be attending the UCA’s Women in Tunneling (WIT) field trip to visit the Hampton Roads Bridge and Tunnel Project in Norfolk, Virginia, this week.
The Women in Tunneling Group focuses on bringing light to the importance of women in tunneling, and on finding ways to encourage more women to get involved in this exciting field. The number of women working in tunneling has increased in recent years, and WIT wants to maintain the trend.
We are proud to have Dr. Kundu, one of GZ’s tunnel experts, as a key committee member of the WIT UCA Group. We are also demonstrating our full support by sponsoring the WIT field trip.
The field trip will be a visit to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion which is the largest highway construction project in Virginia’s history. This transformative undertaking, scheduled for completion in November 2025, will widen the current four-lane segments along nearly ten miles of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton, with new twin tunnels across the harbor. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges and tunnels. VDOT is the owner of the HRBT Expansion Project. The TBM launched from the South Island (Norfolk side) in April 2023, and tunnel at a rate of about 50 feet per day.
