We are honored to announce that GZ’s Senior Tunnel Engineer Lorcan Heffernan was awarded winner of the Values Award for Collaboration from ALIGN, the joint venture for the C1 package of HS2. Lorcan has been been nominated 5 times for the collaboration value. Among others, he was particularly valued by the client for his proactiveness, his problem-solving skills by providing quick design alternatives, and his constant willingness to help even if the near impossible is requested of him.

GZ is working on tunnel design and serving as a geotechnical specialist as member of the Align JV in Area Central, specifically on the C1 work package (Chiltern Tunnels). GZ’s main scope of works includes the 16km-long Chiltern twin bored TBM tunnels, with 38 cross passages, the geotechnical baseline report, together with the Durability Report, Tunnel Obstructions Assessment and the Settlement and Potential Damage Assessment.

During the design phase Lorcan Heffernan acted as Tunnelling Specialist on this project, developing pre-support options, sequence drawings, specifications for the different elements of construction (Pre-Support, Instrumentation and Monitoring, Excavation and Support, Sprayed Concrete, Waterproofing and Cast in-situ Concrete Lining) and the CDM Risk Register.

Since December 2021 Lorcan Heffernan has fulfilled the role of Senior SCL Engineer (Designers Representative) on site, providing site support during the construction of the Cross-Passages and Adits.
